Imperialism and Chinese nationalism : Germany in Shantung

In 1898 Germany obtained a sphere of influence in the Chinese province of Shantung. Basing his study on hitherto unused Chinese and German archival materials, John Schrecker examines the history of this colonial venture. In so doing, he provides a fresh approach to such vital issues as Chinese nationalism and foreign policy and gives new depth to the understanding of the crucial era which led up to the Revolution of 1911. It is the only modern examination of this major example of German imperialism and presents many insights into the problems of German colonialism and, in particular, the colonial policy of the German navy.
